Venues: Google Maps

Players,

I’ve started compiling a Google Map of pool and snooker venues around Canberra and Queanbeyan. At the moment, Ive restricted myself to venues with two or more tables, however feel free to add single-table venues (but be sure to note this.)

Please feel free to add to this – the more info, and the more venues, the better!

State of Origin 2010

If the matches played so far this year are any indication, it’s going to be a very close year for SofO!

5th Division
Southern Guns and Northern Potters drew 16-16 after being neck and neck all match.
Special mention to Nam Ngo from the Southern Guns and Ruth Stone from the Northern Potters who both shot 4/4.

4th Division
Southern Guns defeated Northern Potters 14-18. The Guns were in front 11-5 at half time, and the Potters came back to make it only 13-11 to the Guns after the third round. What a match!
Special mention to Terry Cunningham from the Southern Guns who shot 4/4.

Southern Guns take a four frame lead into next Wednesday’s 3rd Division match which will be played at Ojo Cafe & Bar. Come down and cheer for your team (and your footy team – it will be on the big screen) in what looks like it will be another tough match!

Results: 2010 Open Singles Round 4 and Top 16 Qualifiers

The Open Singles Title is headed for an interesting finish in a fortnight’s time (no play on long weekends). After a tight and exciting Round 4, only 7 players from last year’s Top 16 qualified this year. While 3 of the 09 Top 4 still remain, 3 of last year’s successful ACT Team have already missed out.

While Group 3 had a clear 3 frame gap between 4th and 5th, amazingly Groups 1 & 4 came down to the last frame of the day, including a straight shootout between Dean Welsh and Chippa for 4th. But this was nothing compared to Group 2, which had a 3 way playoff for 4th, eventually won by Mick Norton (who had actually lost his last frame which could have seen through clear).

With a number of players making their first Top 16, as well as the good spread of players qualifying from across the Top 50 rankings, ACT is getting stronger every year. The depth is improving with each Tournament and the Top 16 looks to be an extremely tight event if this weekend’s groups are anything to go by.

So come on down to The Maram on the weekend of 19/20 June to see the best of the best battle it out for the 9 places in the State Team. Play will start at 11am both days, with two round robins to be completed day. Not only that, the Top 4 will qualify for the following week’s State Title Round Robin. So they all have plenty to play for…

Results: 2010 Open Singles Round 3

Hi all

[UPDATED 31/5/10 15:20 – fixed link to results. Thanks, Ted.]

The race for the state team / state title is really heating up now. With the round of 64 behind us, we now head into the final 32 players to battle it out for that elusive Top 16 spot.

As I said last week, this round was where the big boys come into play. Going into the final round before the Top 16, 23 of the 33 seeds are left standing. Of the 10 that fell this round, it included two of last year’s Top 16, who came to grief in one of the tightest groups of the round. Whilst this group avoided a playoff, a few others came down to the last frame of the day or did make it to a playoff.

I’ll leave it to you all to sift through the results, but I’ll put my two bobs’ worth in on the dominators once again. Mongrel and Anthony Chia hit 22/6, Steve Thomas and Kenny Nicol hit 21/7, but Matt Harmon out-dominated everyone with a 21/3 round. (Am I inventing new words with out-dominated?)

In addition to topping his group, Anthony also welcomed a beautiful little boy into his life on Tuesday. Congratulations to Anthony and his wife – if this is your first, welcome to the world of nappies. I actually have one due any day now, so maybe in 25 years time the names Chia and Jones will battle it out for the state title while their old men are fighting it out in the masters…

Commiserations to the players who bowed out this round – I’d be stoked to have made it as far as you. In fact I did one year, you can read about… yeah no one cares…

Seriously, we really are getting to the business end of the tournament. Whilst the word “gimme” was thrown out two rounds ago, the level of play required to get through this round is way above what most of us can imagine. Yes, some of the seeds have fallen, but the players who knocked them out are obviously deserving to be where they are.

I can’t wait for this weekend to see who busts it open for a Top 16 spot, and good luck for all 32 players remaining.
