Congratulations to Dean & Matt on their 2nd Doubles title as a pair, to go with their 2005 victory. But the going wasn’t always easy, as they had to fight back from an average first round to storm home into the finals.

The weekend began with 12 pairs fighting it out for the four spots in the finals, with last year’s finalists not competing (although runner up Anthony Chia had found a new partner in Stephen Thomas), the defending 3rd and 4th placings of Mongrel & Mick Norton and Michael Hazilias & Rony Sood looked to be favourites along with Dean & Matt and Anthony & Steve. But at this level, no one can be counted out, and backing up from last year’s Top 8 were Alessandro Nasca & Dragan Markovic (who had missed last year’s Top 4 by a playoff), while Top 16 pairs Ben Boyd & Troy Miller (again missing advancement by playoff), Nicole Welsh & Semisi Naupoto and 2008 Runners Up Peter Madden & Peter (Chippa) Penfold were back for another crack. Ian Stanley & Ted Mallowes, Jack Dehm & Matt Connor and Dylan McFawn & Kris Bandte joined my personal wildcards, Kenny Nicol & Richard Bondietti to make up the field. Continue reading

An exciting weekend of doubles was played over the weekend at The Maram, with two groups seeing playoffs and the final 12 pairs decided in the race for the 2010 ACTEBA Open Doubles Title. AGM: Notice of Motion

Players,

Please be aware that the following Notice of Motion has been submitted by Simon Tadd for the upcoming AGM. The motion has been tabled correctly and seconded, and will be discussed and voted on at the AGM.

History

Many years ago when the ACTEBA started it was made up of a bunch of friends who loved playing pool – there was only one division. Due to the small number of teams involved, most captains also held positions on the executive committee and the few who did not were happy to be a part of the meeting and chat with their friends, followed by some pool games.

Rationale

Over my lifetime I have played, administered or coached in the following sports:

– swimming (team);
– hockey
– cricket
– basketball
– tennis
– indoor cricket
– rugby
and of course eight ball.

All of these sports were run by a committee or group made up of players or ex-players, none of these sports required representatives from all teams to turn out for a monthly meeting. Preferring to allow the committee to administer the sport they played.

In the earlier years of the association it may have been appropriate to involve team representatives in a regular meeting, as there were many issues not covered under the rules or bi-laws that requiring resolution.

Those days have passed!

The association has grown over the years and has created comprehensive bi-laws that give players greater clarity and certainty of the rules of their sport. The advancement of technology now makes electronic communication common place and more acceptable than ever before.

The Motion

1/ I propose that the executive and core executive discontinue joint monthly meetings. That the full executive meet on a quarterly basis. Being four planned meeting per calendar year and one Annual
General Meeting, which may be held separately or concurrently with a planned meeting.

2/ That the core executive continue to meet on a monthly basis and distribute a monthly newsletter to team captains. The newsletter may be distributed in an electronic format and must be distributed no later than five working day from the date of the core executive meeting. All captains reserve the right to be observers at the monthly core executive meetings.

Details

I believe that communication between the core executive committee and registered teams would be maintained by replacing six meeting a year with six newsletters.

For critical or urgent matters the executive committee still maintains the right to call an extraordinary meeting. Disciplinary proceedings would be unaffected by the above motion.

Bonus points could still be made available (if needed) for reporting match results on time and for handing in completed match forms and attending the quarterly run meeting.

Hi all,

Firstly, good luck to all 32 teams playing doubles this weekend at the Maram. The action commences at 11am both days, so come down for a gander if you’ve got nothing better to do!

Results below and attached. The ladder includes bonus points for submitting your results (2 teams haven’t) and handing in your scoresheets (9 teams!), but not the bonus points for attending the meeting, as I don’t have the list of attendees as yet… Continue reading

Nationals: Open Singles positions

The ACTEBA has 6 spots available in the National Single titles to be held in Adelaide 17-30 October. In accordance with our by-laws these spots have been offered to all members of the top 16 from Open Singles selection trials. The spots are fully self-funded with no support to be provided by ACTEBA. Players need only be available on the day of play and the event is knockout format.

These positions are now being offered to those players who competed in the top 32 of the Open Singles selection trials. The positions are offered on a first come first served basis (up to 6) should more interest exist then current rankings will be considered with the top 6 ranked players being offered the position.

Response is to be via email (pres@acteba.com.au) or phone message 0408 227 341 to Joseph Morrall. Any interest must be received no later than 27 August 2010.

In the event that 6 positions are not filled the positions will be offered to the highest ranked players in either the Ladies or Masters team.

ACTEBA will not consider interest from outside the groups already discussed unless exceptional circumstances can be presented.

State Trials: 2010 Open Doubles Round 2 Groups

Hi all,

(This has been sent to the captains distribution list as well as all participating players)

Please find attached the groups for the 2nd round of the ACTEBA Open Doubles championships. All groups will be at the Maram (2 on Sat, 2 on Sun) and the bistro will be open between 12 noon and 2pm both days. Good luck to all teams, and remember, only the top 3 teams make it through to the final 12.

State Trials: 2010 Open Doubles Round 1 Results

This weekend saw the first round of the Open Doubles played at The Maram, Kaleen Bar & Bistro and the Labor Club. With 10 groups of 8 and only the top 3 qualifying in each, it was always going to be cutthroat, but the weekend did see a few surprises.

The dominators this weekend were Bob Sifri & Edmund Chen (17/4), Pete Smith & Shane Smith (15/3), Nicole Welsh & Semisi Naupoto (15/3) and Brent Hampton & Jason Tanaskovic (15/3).

But I have brag about my performance, for the first time in my eight ball trials history, my partner and I were actually leading our group. It doesn’t matter that it was only because we finished our first frame with a win before anyone else, and then we lost our next 3 and wound up 6th, for about two minutes we were the leaders in our group with one frame against everyone else’s zero, so there. (I’ve also been asked to mention that I had two shots on the black in another frame and potted the white on the first visit – happy, Callum & Pat???).

All reports were of a great weekend for everyone, with the days being played in a great spirit and a surprisingly smoothly run day of doubles, rather than the usual bog down we can sometimes get. So credit must go to both the players and adjudicators, especially the rookies, Tolly and Mel (with a nod to the mentor, Scrol).

Groups for next weekend will be out by Tuesday afternoon, but all four groups will be played at The Maram next weekend.

State Trials: 2010 Masters Singles and Ladies Doubles

Hi all

A huge day at The Maram on Sunday 24 July saw both the Ladies Doubles Top 4 and the Masters Singles Top 8 play off for their respective titles, with the Masters also playing for the 4 spots in this year’s ACT Masters Team. With ACTEBA’s most experienced adjudicator overseeing the two groups, the 16 participants were assured of a smoothly run day.
