2011 Winter Captains Info and Draw

Hi all

Please find attached the Captain’s Pack for the 2011 Winter Season. (Thanks to Matt Power for putting this together).

Included is:

You will notice that the finals series format has changed. For those who haven’t attended the meetings or read the minutes, week 1 is 1 v 2 and 3 v 4. The winner of 1 v 2 progresses straight to the Grand Final, while the loser plays the winner of 3 v 4 to get there the following week. For the loser of 3 v 4, sorry, no more second chances this year. This gives more of a reward to the teams that finish in the top 2.

Please refresh yourself with the guide for captains, it is a useful tool for any queries that may come up throughout the season. It also avoids the “I didn’t know I had to do that” argument!

Also, a LOT of work has been done to update the by laws by Matt Power. These were officially passed as accepted at last night’s meeting and will be emailed out soon. Please don’t just delete the email when it comes, it can save you a world of hurt if you know the rules.

IMPORTANT – registration fees are due at the next meeting, MONDAY 1st AUGUST. This only gives you 3 rounds to collect your fees from your players, so please be organised.

Good luck to all teams this season. We continue to see close battles for the finals spots and tight finals matches being played, showing that we are getting stronger each season.

State Trials: 2011 Open Singles Round 3 Results and Round 4 Groups

UPDATED – Venues are confirmed.
Group 1 – The Basement (Sun)
Group 2 – The Maram (Sat)
Group 3 – The Maram (Sat)
Group 4 – Labor Club (Sun)

Hi all

Yet another exciting round of eight ball was contested on the weekend, with two groups decided by playoffs. This included group 3, which saw the top 3 finish level on 16 frames, then two players play off for 4th after finishing just one frame back on 15!

Not too many surprises, with most of the top seeds performing well, but some big efforts from some of the “lower” seeds certainly shook things up this weekend. Mention has to go to Brent Hampton (23/9), as well as Mongrel and Dean Welsh (both 22/6).

We did see 10 of the top 32 seeds fall this weekend, including one very big upset, but with 8 of our top 10 and 16 of our top 20 still remaining, it’s going to be very tough for one of our three Round One “bolters” to keep their great run up.

In case you didn’t already notice and haven’t opened the attachments before reading my dribble, attached are the results from Round 3 and groups for Round 4. With so much more on the line this weekend, there will be no changes. These are locked in. Venues, however, will be added tonight (didn’t get a chance what with the meeting last night).

Well played to the players who bowed out this round, there are a lot of players out there who would have loved to have had a shot. And of course, good luck to all players this weekend. Remember – a spot in the 16 and a chance at the State team is on the line!

2011 State of Origin: Div 1 and Final Results

Hi all,

Last night, the Division 1 state of origin match was held at the Canberra Labor Club in Belconnen. Heading into the match, the score was tied up at 80 frames each, meaning whoever won the night would win the series…

A solid opening round saw the Potters lead 5-3 at the first break, a performance they matched in the 2nd and 3rd rounds to lead 15-9 with most thinking the result was now a forgone conclusion. However, the Guns rallied strongly, winning the first 4 frames of the last round to bring the score back to 15-13, before the Potters won the next 2 to clinch victory. Final score… 17-15.

A great series this year, and I think the hosting of 2 matches at the same venue on the same night was a real winner. I suspect this will happen again next year, meaning the 5 division matches will be over in 3 weeks. Bring it on I say, and GO POTTERS!

2011 Open Singles Rd 2 Results and Rd 3 groups

[UPDATED 11:15 29/6/11: Round 3 groups available here: http://www.acteba.com.au/downloads/2011_Open_Singles_Round3_Groups.xls]

[UPDATED 21:05 28/6/11: Round 2 results attached.]

Hi all

With 4th place in all 9 groups decided by 2 frames or less (including two playoffs), it was another tight weekend of tournament Eight Ball.

An incredible 12 players notched up 20+ wins on the weekend, with Palmer Dunn hitting 24/8 to win the most frames, and Simon Wade clocking 21/7 in a group of 8 to also hit 75% for the day.

With 67 players left, this weekend sees the Top 32 seeds join the qualifiers in 8 groups (3 x 9 players and 5 x 8 players). This is where it really gets interesting as the pressure definitely gets raised about 4 notches.

For those who like my useless facts, the 36 qualifiers contain just 21 of the 35 players from the 33-65 seeds. Now, the 65th seed was ranked 76th, and of the remaining 15 qualifiers, only 6 also come from within the top 100. A further 5 are from 101-150, while 4 players are ranked outside the top 150!!!

I’ll have more useless facts about the number of frames we’ve played so far next week…

Groups for round 3 will will be out in the morning, I was supposed to do it today but the file I sent myself at work was corrupted so here I am now doing this.

I have only sent this to the captains, as my email doesn’t have the capacity to send to bulk addresses, so if you want to send it on to your team please do, but I will send to all players in the morning as well.

Please find attached the results for round 2.

2011 State of Origin: Div 2 Results

Hi all,

Apologies for the lateness of this (almost forgot to send it!) but this is now the stuff dreams are made of… Last night saw the Guns overhaul the Potters 18-14. After the Potters smashed them in div 6, the Guns have clawed their way back with 3 wins and a draw. This means the series is all tied up at 80 frames each heading into the first division match next Wed.

So hopefully all who read this (and more) will be at the Labor Club in Belconnen, 8pm next Wed night, to see the best Canberra has to offer battle it out for the shield! Come on Guns [edit: heheh]!!!

State Trials: 2011 Open Singles Round 1 Results and Round 2 Groups

[UPDATED]: Please note that the Round 2 groupings were re-adjusted about two hours after they were first emailed, please check that you have the latest version.

Hi all

Well, my final tournament has kicked off in style with a tight round of the Open Singles this weekend gone.

Of the 11 groups that competed, 4th was decided by a playoff in two of them, with a further 7 decided by 1 frame! Only group 11 was clear cut, with a massive 4 frame gap between 4th and 5th. As for the other group…

We had the unfortunate situation this week of being left with a group of 4. Well, not unfortunate for the 4 who then got a free pass to round 2, but I guess unfortunate for the rest of us battling through a group of 8 or 9 only to miss out by one frame after 7 hours of eight ball. (Curse that missed black in round 1!!!!)

I know circumstances change and people can’t always make their group, but I only ask that if you know you will be unavailable, please call either myself or Matt Power before the weekend to inform us. While we won’t be able to help with switching your day of play, we can at least look at moving players around to keep it a level playing field. Think about how you felt at 6 o’clock on the weekend knowing a group of 4 had played. I know I was pretty p***ed off on the day.

All that being said, there were a few players who did the right thing and let us know in advance, so thank you to them.

Moving on, well done to all players who played this weekend. And congratulations to the players who qualified for Round 2. This weekend sees the seeds 33-65 join the fray with our 44 qualifiers. A bumper round 2 of 77 players has been split into 9 groups this weekend, again with the top 4 qualifying.

Please find attached results from round 1 and the groups for round 2.

State Trials: 2011 Open Singles Round 1 Groups

[UPDATED Jun 16, 14:48]

Hi all

Again – apologies for the delay in finalising these groups. The extra players I missed actually would have created a group of 10, so to alleviate this we now have a 65th seed (Phil Bryan) who will join in Round 2 with seeds 33-64.

You will notice that a few players have changed groups – however only two have actually changed their day of play. This was unavoidable in the process of adding the additional players.

Please see attached for final groups and venues.

Chris Jones

Please find attached the groups for round 1 of the Open Singles. Venues will be confirmed in the next few days, but thought you might like to at least see when and who you were playing.

Don’t forget that the top 64 seeds have the first week off.

Play will start at 11am for all groups, with tables open from 10.30am for practice. If you are not present WHEN THE FIRST FRAME OF THE DAY IS CALLED you will be disqualified, unless you have notified either your adjudicator, myself or Matt Power PRIOR to play commencing – with a GOOD excuse. “I slept in” does not count as a good excuse.

Play will be four round robins, so for the groups of 9, this does mean 32 frames. Please be mindful of the need to shorten breaks between play by checking with your adjudicator FIRST before you go for a smoke, take a toilet break or try and squeeze in a bite to eat. You will find they are usually accomodating.

On that note, while we encourage you to purchase food from the venues that are supporting us, please be aware that a full sit down meal that takes you half an hour to eat is not fair on the other players. If you
are happy to come and go from your food then by all means order whatever you like.

Remember that at all times the adjudicator is in control of the group, so be ready to play at all times if they need you to. Adjudicators also have the final say in any close decisions or rulings that may come up through the day, so please call them over if you have any queries.

Other than that, good luck to all players this weekend in what is our largest tournament of the year. Again – venues to be confirmed in the next few days.

2011 State of Origin: Div 3 and 4 Results

Hello all,

There was more than just a magnificent Blues win last night… as the Maram also hosted the second State of Origin, but this was for the ACTEBA and included matches for Divisions 3 and 4. After a win and a draw in the first two games, the Potters were looking to put the series beyond the reach of the Guns, however that was not to happen…

Div 4: Southern Guns def Northern Potters 17-15
Div 3: Southern Guns def Northern Potters 17-15

Two great matches, just as exciting as the league. After 4 matches, with 2 remaining, the total score is Northern Potters 66, Southern Guns 62. Next week sees the Division 2 match, to be held at Fyshwick Tavern. Go Potters!
