Summer 2009 Season Wrapup

Hi all

Another season has come and gone, and I hope it’s been a good one for everyone. I can tell you now it’s been a great one for about 40 players, with their teams winning the Grand Finals on Wednesday night.

The Motley Cues faced an early deficit in division 5 against the Gremlins, before Captain Robbie Howe “went foe it” to avenge last season’s grand final loss to the Rail Runners with a 13-9 victory.

The Jets had a great season, missing the 4th division minor premiership by 1 point, but made amends with a 13-10 win over the Demons, regaining their spot in 3rd division.

Division 3 saw the Pumas go in as hot favourites after an almost unbeaten season, but the Seriuos Fouls caused an upset when they ran out winners in a tight game, 13-11.

The DV8s ran out to a massive lead in the division 2 grand final, before the Pidos came back strongly in round 3. Soorage and his team then picked up their game and sealed a relatively easy win 13-9 to nail a really big trophy.

Division 1 once again proved to be the biggest match of the Grand Final evening. The Embalmers took on the Stickmen and the match ran neck and neck right up until the final frame, resulting in a 12 all draw and a playoff. The Embalmers then surprised the Stickmen by nailing the playoff 3-0 and yet another Division One Title.

I’d like to thank all players and in particular the captains for another successful season of Eight Ball. But there is no rest for the wicked, with the Masters this weekend preceding two months of Open State Team Trials. For those who haven’t checked it out yet, the groups for the first round are available on the Docs and Forms page with venues to be confirmed this weekend.

A big thank you of course to the venues who have supported us this season by hosting teams, we look forward to another great season in 6 weeks time.

Don’t forget State of Origin starts next week, for details see below.

Remember that nominations for the Winter Season are due at the next meeting.

Good luck to all players in the trials, and I will see you all next season.

Regards
Chris Jones
ACTEBA Tournament Director

Results: Summer 09 Finals Round 2, Draw for Preliminary Finals

Hi all

An extraordinary week of finals saw the 3rd placed team in divisions one to four qualifying first for the grand final! The Embalmers, Pidos and Serious Fouls all defeated their minor premiers, while division four saw the minor premier Tomtones bundled out after two rounds, with the Demons taking first spot in the grand final over the 4th placed Rail Runners. Ironically, the Tomtones had only lost one match in the regular season, against the same team who beat them tonight, the Jets.

Division 5 kept the status quo with the minor premier Gremlins maintaining their regular season form to grab a Grand Final berth, with the preliminary final next week involving 2nd and 3rd.

The other preliminary finals look to be extremely tight, with 1st playing 2nd in the top 3 divisions. All six teams will be eager to claim the spot in the match they thought should have been theirs by now. Please note that all Preliminary Finals and Grand Finals are held at neutral venues so please check below for your venue.

Well done to the Labor Club Matildas, Southern Cross Tuggeranong ToSheas, The Basement Jagerbombers, Buffalo Bar and Grill Tomtones and The Maram Deep Pockets for a successful season. And thank you to the venues who supported them.

Congratulations must definitely go to the Fyshwick Tavern Embalmers, Southern Cross Tuggeranong Pidos, The Maram Serious Fouls, Kaleen Demons and Ojo’s Bar and Cafe Gremlins for qualifying for the Grand Final.

Don’t forget that this Sunday the Top Four Ladies fight it out for the State Title at the Canberra Labor Club in Belconnen. Nicole Welsh, Michelle Massey, Gemma Pike and Cindy Backmore will see if the 2009 Championship can be stolen by one of the new faces. It promises to be a great day of eight ball, with multiple champion Cindy and current Australian representitive and defending champion Nicole taking on the next generation of ACT Ladies. I encourage all players to come down and have a drink and cheer the ladies on.

We are looking for volunteers to referee for the day, for as long or as short as you are willing to offer your services. Even a few frames will be greatly appreciated (and the tournament director will buy you a drink). If you are available, please contact State Head Umpire Greg Murphy on 0407 687 749. Your assistance is greatly appreciated but don’t worry, if you just want to watch no one will hassle you to ref like on a Wednesday!

Below are the results for tonight and the draw for next weeks’ preliminary finals. please note that the venues are subject to change but in the unlikely event of this happening the captains of both teams will be notified immediately.
