The 2009 ACTEBA Open Singles Champion is:
Congratulations to Matt on winning his 4th Open Singles title, to go with his 2000, 2003 and 2004 victories. Number 4 puts Matt level with Steve Woods for most Open Singles Titles, and into 2nd place for overall Open Titles (with his 1999 & 2005 Open Doubles Titles).
7 weeks of Open Singles (and 3,988 frames) culminated in Saturday’s Top 4 Shootout, with Matt taking on defending champion Dean Welsh, Australian Under 21 Champion Daniel Sostarko and first time Top 16 qualifier Stephen Thomas. Unlike last year, where Dean had to start way back in round one, all four players were seeded, with Steve the lowest at 27.
Unfortunately, Daniel was unable to compete on the day, changing the dynamics of the shootout entirely. As Matt and Steve commenced the first match of race to 7, this left Dean to sit and wait for an hour and 45 minutes for his first frame. Similarly, Matt and Steve were to have similar waits later in the day.

Congratulations to the 9 players who this weekend earned an invitation to represent the ACT at this year’s Australian Eight Ball Championships, in particular the four players who qualified for next weekend’s Top 4 shootout to decide the 2009 ACTEBA Open Singles Champion.
A new look Top 16 contested this year’s championship, with only defending champion Dean Welsh, Anthony Chia, Mongrel, Matt Power, Michael Hazilias and Rony Sood backing up from last year’s Top 16. Some old faces returned to the fold, with Danny Marlow, John “JR” Pagden, Paul Carlile, Semisi Naupoto and of course Matt Harmon ready to make their presence known. Newcomers to the final round were Andrew Pearce, who qualified from 3rd division, Daniel Sostarko, the reigning Australian Under 21 Champion, Edmund Chen, top shooter in 1st division last season, Stephen Thomas, perennial top 32 player and Nicole Welsh, current Australian Ladies Representative. News in from Dan Marlow:
I just wanted to let you know that my brother, Adam, who made a lot of friends in ACTEBA whilst playing in Canberra and who has been in New Zealand this year won the New Zealand 8-Ball Champs in Tokoroa yesterday.
When I spoke to him yesterday he was pleased to have done it at his first attempt but said that he would like to have had a go at the Australian Champs while he was here. He also didn’t take his cue to NZ and managed the feat with a rack cue from the venue. Nice!
Anyway, I thought that you (and ACTEBA) would be keen to know that Canberra pool is being well represented in New Zealand.
Regards,
Danny.
… great effort!
