Results: 2010 Open Singles Round 2

Hi all

Another massive weekend (well not as massive as last weekend, but still…) has been completed in the 2010 Open Singles Trials. With Round One well behind us, the players this weekend were finding that there were definitely no easy frames to be played. But while the standard of play and quality of players was impressive this weekend, just wait until next weekend when the big boys (and lovely lady) come in with the introduction of the seeds.
While I was happy with the way I played despite missing out (you can read about it on my blog www.jonesyplayedawesome.com.au), there were a few big names ranked just outside the seeds who also missed out. Plus, with the tournament down the final 65, 16 players ranked above 65 have done well to qualify for Round Three, including two unranked players.

There was admittedly some scratchy play this round, but it’s hard to keep it up for 32 frames isn’t it. That being said, players of this standard still produced a majority of quality frames to keep the spectators on their toes, with most groups going down to the wire. Amazingly there were no playoffs this weekend (a first with 8 or more groups?) but at least half the groups were dependant upon the final frame of the day to decide the final four. People might think us adjudicators plan it that way, well while we love the tension it normally just sorts itself out that way without our help. To be honest though, it is easier without everyone staring over our shoulders adding up frames when it is tight right at the end, but I was doing the same when I played this weekend so I can’t blame anyone!

As I said, next round we see the big boys come in (as well as the lovely Nicole) and if you thought it was hard this week, just wait. But the players who qualified this week are definitely ready, having two weeks of solid match practice under their belt.

Well done to all players who bowed out this week for making the second round, and as always, good luck to all players next week. I will release the Round 3 groups in the next couple of days, but just as a warning, preferred days of play are not guaranteed next weekend. With that in mind, I will be releasing the groups as early as I possibly can.

A thank you to our venues this weekend, as well as our adjudicators, all of whom made it possible for us.

Ps The blog I mentioned above does not exist, only people who read this far into my eight ball emails care what I have to say… well, some of them anyway…
