Results: Winter 2009 Grand Final and Season Wrap Up

Last night’s Grand Finals saw mixed results, with 2 runaway victories coupled with 3 close finishes.

Division 1 had two old foes aiming up and went down to the wire, with the Embalmers emerging victorious 13-11 over the Hammerheads after narrowly avoiding a playoff. I don’t have my records here at work, but I am pretty sure that makes four in a row for the Fyshwick Tavern outfit.
The Maram Snipers had the biggest win of the night, easily accounting for the Kaleen Pidos 13-4, to see them return to Div 1 after being unlucky to drop down this season.

Division 3 had been the tightest division all season, with the narrow results carrying all the way to the Grand Final, before the Demons took one back for Kaleen Tavern, 13-11 over the Pirates.

The Rail Runners, undefeated all season, were met with strong resistance by the Deep Pockets and produced the only playoff of the night in Division 4. The Rail Runners won through to take the match 15-13 and round off an undefeated season in style.

Newcomers the Concords took out the Division 5 title with a 13-6 win over the Earls, after both teams had finished the regular season equal on points and frame percent in 3rd place. The first playoff had produced a tight match but it wasn’t to be this time round for the Earls.

Well played to all our premiers, with commiserations to the runners up – next year, next year…

With just the Under 21’s and Champion of Champions remaining on this year’s calendar, that’s pretty much it for me for the year (which will please my wife to no end!). I would like to thank all the captains for their cooperation and patience this year, it’s been a long one. I would also like to congratulate our winners this year, Matt Harmon (Open Singles), Tony Fleming & Steven Woods (Open Doubles), Dragan Markovic (Open Nine Ball), Cindy Blackmore (Ladies Singles and Doubles), Nicole Welsh (Ladies Doubles and Nine Ball), Tolly Auvaa (Masters Singles) and Daniel Sostarko (Under 21’s). Daniel was also the Australian Under 21’s Champion. As well as the winners last night, we also had the Embalmers, DV8s, Serious Fouls, Jets and Motley Cues in the Summer season, who all have Champion of Champions to look forward to.

It’s been a successful year all round for the ACTEBA, with 5 full divisions once more and record numbers in the selection trials. And of course there was the performances at the Nationals, with the Open, Ladies and Masters all recording their best ever results, as well as an extremely professionally run Tournament. The Organising Committee of Doug Percy, Joseph Morrall, Ted Mallowes, Cath Jones, Greg Murphy, Kathy Harmon, Robin Butler and Sid Scott did an outstanding job and really showcased the ACTEBA to the rest of the states. (Please tell me I didn’t forget anyone there!)

A last BIG thank you again to all the venues who have either hosted teams or selection trials events this year. Your help is greatly appreciated and it is no secret without your support we couldn’t do what we love to do best, which is play Eight Ball!

Regards
